A scene from Cinque secondi: young women and men work the soil among old vines and olive trees with hoes and spades; behind them a meadow and a villa with a clock on its roof, among pines

Collemezzano, Sasseto in the film

The true story

Matilde, the young woman who brings an abandoned vineyard back to life, is inspired by me. The film’s Sasseto is Collemezzano, my family’s land, where I went back to make wine.

I have known Paolo for years. My videos, my photos and the way I dress guided the character’s costumes and gestures. Many stages of my life are in the film.

I profumi della cantina sono rimasti identici, una petite madeleine di Proust. Basta sentirli, e tutto ritorna.

The scents of the cellar have stayed the same, a madeleine of Proust. One breath of them, and everything comes back.

In the vineyard

The old vines

Paolo put the old vines at the heart of the film, because vines like these are what I make my wine from. I helped the screenwriters with everything about the vineyard and the wine.

The fires lit between the rows against the spring frosts come from my own practice, too. And the scene in which my daughter Aloisa offers Valeria Bruni Tedeschi the red lees of the wine to smear over her face began with a photograph of mine.

Ho cercato di trasmettere tutto il mio amore per le vigne vecchie.

I tried to pass on all my love for old vines.

Aloisa

My daughter Aloisa plays Valentina, one of Matilde’s friends. On set she taught the actors how to work the vines.

Seeing her in a film that also tells our story moved me deeply.

The bottles of the film

For Cinque secondi I painted some bottles by hand, each with the film’s title and Paolo Virzì’s name.

  • Black bottle painted with a figure in a green skirt and the words “Cinque secondi di Paolo Virzì”
  • Black bottle painted with two faces among leaves, water lilies and the words “Cinque secondi di Paolo Virzì”
  • Black bottle painted in white strokes: a figure with open arms, faces and the words “Cinque secondi di Paolo Virzì”
  • Black bottle painted with a city street at night, full of coloured lights

Telling the film

In June 2026 I told the story of the film on the main stage of Identità Golose in Milan, with a video contribution from Paolo Virzì.

At the Trentodoc Festival 2026, in the talk “Vino da Oscar”, I spoke about old vineyards as living sculptures.
